TGIDHTWOT

ooohhhh.... such a heavy downpour. the rain is pouring in buckets as i'm writing. the weather has been dull and gloomy and wet since i cant remember when, after the snowy episode last week i guess. it sure looks like the rain is coming down with a vengeance since drought plagued us for so long. hmmm, it can be pretty romantic to be typing with the lights dimmed, the blind slightly drawn to reveal the stark gray sky taking on a darker hue as time goes and the occasional peers through the windows to see the rain turning from heavy to light to drizzle and the cycle repeats itself. in the background, soothing airport music and whooshing sounds made by cars on the road (and sporadic ambulance sirens and flying planes above) are keeping me accompany. tis is truly a moment to remember.

i hadnt write last night for i came back late from work and had a late dinner and then was glued to wimbledon (i cant wait for tomorrow's match between lleyton hewitt and roger federer) and then dozed off while watching andy roddick playing against the french guy (his name i've jus checked is sebastien grosjean. and i'm happy roddick won.). so one thing led to another. it all started cos i missed the usual bus and had to wait for the next bus which comes at every 20 mins interval. 20 mins seem like eternity when u're feeling cold and hungry. other half fetched me from the bus stop i alighted and we both grabbed takeaway, from the rudest restaurant in our suburb (cos they're the only shop still open), for late dinner. i must say tis. u guys judge okay?! okay, maybe rudest is too much, let's jus say the blurriest (to be kind). after we placed our order with the rudest waitress (i'm kind but she's really rude. only nice to the caucasians from what i noticed. joking and laughing with them right before my eyes for the umpteen times), we sat down to wait. cant expect us to stand right? not much walking space to start with. anyone been to that restaurant will know what i mean. so we dont want to be zhor theng u see. we waited and waited and still no one came to us with our food. btw, we've already paid. it was abt 11pm and they're close to closing for the day though there was still a table of caucasians with dishes that were jus served. the bottomline was, we were hungry and where's our takeaway?????? i told other half we cant be waiting forever unless he dont mind fainting right in front of them which i dont want. we went to the counter where the rudest waitress was and she asked what we ordered. cant she see we were waiting there? at least, come to us and ask what we ordered rather than we go to her right? who else was in the restaurant other than the angmohs? (heck. caucasians are angmohs, angmohs are caucasians. if they want, they can call us chee-nas) OMG, the 2 packets of takeaways were in a plastic bag hanging by the counter!!!! not the first time u know. the last time it was her too. and u know what she told us? ngoh mo tai toe ney. OMIIIIIIGOD!!!!! what is tis? she didnt see us??!!?? i cant believe she's still working there. they should sack her. customer service is very important. customers spend money at the shop and deserve basic customer service. seeing that we were waiting and coming forward to ask is a very effortless thing to do. now, i really feel like boycotting the shop. bleah.

i jus made one thermo flask of milo which i shall slowly sip through the evening. it'd be ideal to have some chips to munch on now. gonna catch lost and the amazing race later. thank God i didnt have to work on thursdays. TGIDHTWOT. wow, what a mouthful. not like TGIF, short and sweet.

time flies when u least expect it to be. today is the last day of june. second half of 2005 is here. soon, it'd be 2006 and so on and so forth. before i know it, i'd be a wrinkly boh-gay old lady updating my blog.

lao dou and the wimbledon

yday i wrote an update email to my lao dou (daddy in chinese) from quintiles where i worked a couple of years, and received a reply that brought tears to my eyes. i'll quote bits from his email that made me teary (u may not find it emotional since i didnt type out everything. for privacy's sake).

Hi, my daughter,

......................................................................................
Your email hinted that.....................................
.....................................Maybe I can help...................................
Do write (me too).
Laodou

as i read his reply, i felt tis surge of hot air inside my head and tears started welling up in my eyes and there was a lump in my throat. OMG, i was getting all emotional and crybaby. its indeed comforting to get an email of advices and encouragement, whats more, from a man of few words.

i'll leave it here for today. gonna concentrate on watching wimbledon now. i probably fall asleep in between matches since work jus now was tiring. ciao.

plant talk

if u want your plants to thrive, talk to them. u can praise them or curse them, it doesnt matter. your plants wont be able to tell the difference. BUT if u choose to play them music, go for heavy metal or rock compared to classical. so to summarize, first choice: heavy metal, second choice: classical music, third choice: talk to them. of course, if u leave your plants alone with water and sunlight and occasional fertilizers, they do grow too but not as well though.

had a chat with a poly close friend over msn in the afternoon. it started amicable but turned heated. i was telling her abt the way she phrased her statements and that it may not sit well with pple she hardly know. and i kept assuring her that i'm not offended but merely to warn her sort of. i also mentioned that it could be the usage of words. different pple perceive the english language differently. especially the emotions that the writer was trying to portray. i felt that i've tried my best to make her feel least offended before telling her how i felt despite the fact that we're really close friends. so we were chatting abt religion (and btw, we're of the same religion). i dont know why she insisted that i dont agree with her. all i was trying to highlight was the way she speaks (btw, in my opinion, she speaks good english) and airing my opinions. right now, i still cant fathom why a small chat would turn sour. i wont ask who's at fault here cos no one heard her side of the story. anyhow, it seem that we cant talk nicely anymore. though we dont bear grudges or harbor hard feelings and surely chat again as if nothing like today happened. the fact is we cant hold a conversation for more than 30mins or maybe 1 hr before we start debating.
have we not talk regularly that we lost the rapport? its hard enough to make new friends (when u're getting on in years) and now losing a friend?? boohoo...the thought of it is scary. okay, i'm exaggerating. it cant be that bad.

okay, here's my update on the yam roll we bought yday but hadnt tried it yet. before i start, i've to say i'm afraid or skeptical of anything roll from savoy since yday. so now the only way savoy can redeem themselves is through tis yam roll lying in my possession. okay, my first bite was kinda bleachy i thought and i quickly handed it over to other half for his opinion. he said it was okay then only i took it back for subsequent bites. so it went okay. yam roll passed!!! shop owners, all u have to do is jus make 1 less-than-standard product and u're sure your customer will tell the whole world [ADDED 30/06/05] abt it. and savoy, u have one here. :P

the song on my blog now is homesick by mercyme (from their latest album undone). as the name suggests, i'm pretty much homesick. not telling u much now until things are confirmed but one thing for sure is homesickness do play a role in determining where i'll be residing in future. or perhaps a short trip home is all i need. i miss so many things back home. i miss the botanic gardens minus the hot weather. i miss going to the concerts held at the shaw foundation symphony stage esp the annual christmas one. fret not, i'm quite sure i'll be there tis year.

i never leave home without them, rain or shine. in fact, they tag along wherever i go. :)

i was told i'm able to wear black polo tee instead of the usual white shirt for work so i dragged other half out of the house to go shopping with me. yeah yeah, its really sad i dont even own a polo tee. we grabbed the chance to get a bite in the city since we were there already. lunch was swift cos we were both famished. had the usual.... vietnamese beef noodles or pho (the way the vietnamese call it). as if lunch wasnt enough, we bought some pastries from a highly raved bakery, Savoy (opposite paddys market).

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

  1. butter roll with a light spread of cream and topped with coconut shavings. VERY BUTTERY = VERY VERY NICE. i'm going back for more.
  2. milkyway. looks very much like those selling at mama shops but it tastes more like those tiny floury balls we ate when we were kids. remember? those come in transparent packs with cartoon animal pics?!? btw, tis pastry has got the best texture in the entire world. it beats my favourite pineapple tarts back home.
  3. yam pastry that is small and cute. color is pretty too. i'm not a yam fanatic but i heard so much abt their yam, i knew i have to try. its not bad. actually i dont know what is good so cant comment much.
  4. german which looks dark and handsome. HA! it looks like its made from dark chocolate and has almond slices sprinkled on top of it. NIGHTMARE! dont know if its me or what. it smells like chlorine (or bleach) and taste like it too (smells like chlorine and i still eat???? cos i thought my acute sense of smell may be wrong and so i confirmed it with my sense of taste). i spat it out immediately, rinsed my mouth 3 times and ate a couple of seaweed crackers to neutralise the taste in my mouth. should i complain to the shop?
  5. yam roll. havent try it yet. still suffering from post bleachy-german. =(

gosh, look at the crowds! are we back in singapore? blame it on the weekend. (btw, tis is market city right above the paddys market). *shudder* we quickly left the place.

walked by tis guy who cuts out side profiles of pple for jus 2 bucks. he's usually surrounded by curious onlookers but today he did not have a customer so we decided to give it a go. other half went for it first then it was my turn. see my half-hearted smile. i was so embarrassed for pple were stopping to see and still i must smile for the camera. *sweat* they were all on my left (not caught on camera).

what i call my own

nice blogskin? too pink for your liking? i always believe in the content that is important cos thats what connects with my family and friends (who read them) but since i've always wanted a design i call my own, i finally sat down to doing it. spent my afternoon peer-ing through dreamweaver and applying an trial and error approach within blogger to achieve tis new look. it looks really simple but take my word, it took me so long i almost gave up. i almost had a heart attack jus now when i loaded the page. the entire page jus refused to turn pink even though the preview looked okay. eventually, i found out i missed out a semi-colon. argghhh. now that its up, i'm really proud of myself (cos i'm such an HTML idiot) though i did gathered some tips from blogger forum. there's still some fine tuning to be done but thats all i'm gonna do for today, i had enough of HTML codes and tags. come tomorrow, i gotto ditch my computer and focus all my attention on other half cos i was totally engrossed in getting tis new look up that i neglected him. ahem, i'm not all bad, i did cook dinner okay?!

chicken franks & onions in sweet and sour sauce. pak choy. chinese & straw mushrooms in oyster sauce.

let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

other half and myself dragged ourselves out of bed for maccas big breakfast and OMG, it was chilly out there. no way i'm going to do my brisk walk i told him. we cancelled all outdoor activities and headed home after a hearty breakfast.

several suburbs in new south wales including katoomba where the blue mountains are have turned into winter wonderlands overnight. saw the snippets on news and boy it was a beautiful sight. read more abt it here. i do not guarantee the article will be up still by the time u wanna read it so alternatively, i quote a short excerpt snow falls from network ten.

snow falls
Extreme weather conditions have hit parts of New South Wales. Almost 3cm of snow fell across Katoomba, Bathurst and Orange overnight. The Bureau of Meteorology says the cold air causing the snowfalls should move north, increasing snow up the Great Dividing Range and along the Northern Tablelands. The Snowy Mountains also received unusually heavy snow overnight.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

it'll be fun if snow falls over kingsford but i bet its gonna be hazardous for motorists out there. anyway, its wishful thinking on my part and a tad against nature, unless la nina decides to visit.

wrapping up

work was fun but it made me really hungry by the time i finished my shift (at 10pm). jus had dinner but it wasnt enough for me. i'm still hungry. i'm feeling like a maccas ice cream cone now (actually i have no idea how that will fill my stomach). no problem getting that fulfilled since the maccas in my area operates 24 hours. then other half suggested i check out the current temperature. if it goes below 10 degrees celcius, we wont go. i told him its probably ard 12 degrees so the chances of me getting my cone is without a doubt. so i checked the internet....ALAS!!!! its 8.1 degree celsius (as at 11pm). okay *in a disappointed tone*, i shall not drag other half in the cold jus for a cone. i jus have to let my dinner digest and forget abt the cone. i hope i can, otherwise, we can always wrap ourselves up like eskimos and go get ourselves myself a cone.

tis is the last u'll hear from me (at least for a while) abt these wraps since other half and i finished the last pieces of
tortilla for breakfast tis morning. u may wanna give it a try with the ingredients u see here (in pink) or whatever that suits your tastebuds or what u can find in your kitchen.

singapore touch

other half and i donated three quarter of our possession of 8days and iweekly magazines to straits kitchen tis afternoon after we had lunch there. i simply love their hainanese chicken rice. their garlic chilli is superb as well. three quarter cos we forgot the one quarter that was in my suitcase of books. so we thought instead of letting these magazines collecting dust in the corner or go into the recycling bins, they'll do better in straits kitchen for that extra singapore touch. other half and myself made a pact to dine at straits kitchen at least once a week, to show our support for singapore cuisine, so that there'll be here to stay and that singaporeans in sydney can continuously and conveniently have a taste of home. i do hope more singaporeans in sydney will come forward to show their support for our fellow singaporean uncle and his wife (i assume) in their restaurant stint here. the couple are both very friendly and approachable. they do not compromise quality of their food. say the nasi lemak is not up to standard on a particular day, they wont sell it. where to buy find [EDITED 22/06/05] such businessman these days?

now i know why the penguins were so well liked by pple after they've watched madagascar (or click here for the real place). i like them too. all except the leader who was so cocky and scheming. was he planning something against the four who went on board the vessel back to new york? or did i misinterpret it? i cant help laughing when i saw one of the penguins applying sunblock on his belly. it reminded me so much of myself. i have the habit of reapplying sunblock while walking on the street. not very glam i know but i heck care. :P

remember the happy-go-lucky gal who loves drinking, working with me at the uni? she sent us a postcard with a picture of the orlos (i tried to google it but yielded infutile results. it might be a czech word from what i remembered. anyway, its some sort of a clock tower or clock mechanism) at the black square (cant find tis on google too. i wonder if she meant old town square) from prague or praha (in czech). truly a beautiful city with intricate architecture and not forgetting history stretched into the medieval times. another great place to add on the must-go list.

below are two random thoughts of mine that i wish to get off my chest.

  1. keeping a pet. it is so not an alternative to raising a kid with less responsibilities. i cant stand some pet owners who happily bring the cute lil puppy or kitten home but treat it with such inhumanity. these animals have their voices too. dont think that they dont speak our language means they have no say or rights. heard of animal rights?
  2. demeaning pple. to some pple out there who speak without thinking twice. i suggest they examine themselves before opening their gaps and start demeaning pple. remember, dont be like pot, calling the kettle black.

okay, i better cool down. i'm gonna relax on my bed with my better homes and gardens magazine now. ciao.

p.s: no one offended me. i was jus mad on behalf of someone. %@#&*^$%#@!!!!

fire talk

some of us watch the telly to fight boredom while some get bored watching the telly and doze off. and when i said that, i meant induction videos on company policies, what to do and what not to do. a bunch of us spent the late afternoon watching at least 5 videos consecutively with breaks in between where the manager spoke more of company polices and whatnot. some obviously looked incredibly bored while one seem to enjoy it. yeah, i'm the nerd who enjoyed it. i was particularly attentive when it came to the different types of fire extinguishers. what is available (water, foam, carbon dioxide, and chemical) and which one to use on what type of fire. it is clear that my interest still lies in the sciences, or at least, cousin or distant relative of the sciences. *waving* bye bye MBA! or God knows i may change my mind one day.

X or Y

first thing first, HAPPY FATHER'S DAY, pa!!! hope u like the card i made. it has the fishies that u like. :PP

saw tis enlightening article entitled pregnant pause in today's issue of body+soul that came free with the sunday telegraph. lemme type it out....

according to the latest issue of Mother & Baby magazine... if you already have two girls or two boys, statistics show that if you conceive a third time you're 75 per cent more likely to have a child of that same gender. one of the possible reasons for this is because some men produce better-quality X-sperm or Y-sperm; hence one will be more likely to hit the ova jackpot.

i havent came across tis in my reproductive physiology class but it does make sense when i think abt it. my cousin had 3 girls, my ex-tutor had 4 girls while my mom's friend had 3 boys. all 3 are examples of tried but failed attempts. hey, look on the bright side, there's always the 25%.

okay, enough of preggy talk. see what other half and i had for lunch, chicken wraps!!! these were the ingredients... soy sauce & manis-marinated-diced-chicken-breast-meat-before-stir-frying, sliced tomatoes, spinach in italian dressing, raw onion rings, salsa sauce + chopped shallots + pressed garlic (for the stir-fry).

house of thai

for an afternoon, my apartment was tis mini bangkok with chattings, laughter and more laughter. it seems that my housemate is hosting a luncheon. and behind my closed door, there was some action going on that decided my dinner.

olfactory system: hmmm.... brain, i can smell a mixture of shoyu (japanese soy sauce), sushi and sashimi.

brain: stomach, i want that for dinner and do not accept anything non-japanese or i'll make u reflux.

stomach: growled in agreement.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

i'm now 40 bucks poorer. who is to blame? my housemate? my olfactory system (for picking up the smell)? my brain (who threatened my stomach of a gastric reflux) or my stomach who obeyed in silence?

empress ma's orders

hey brother, u very funny hor.... how to choose 30 out of 476 pics, u tell me. now u increased it to 50. still cannot lah. i dont care. no more bargaining. 72 is 72. cannot go any lower. even ma also agrees to go with 72. she said she'll pay for it so FOLLOW MA'S ORDERS.

as u can tell, i was handed the task to select pics from my parents' trip for developing (in singapore). yeah, why cant they do it themselves??!! well, simple reason... because there's no more survivor, no more american idol, no more the apprentice, no more my restaurant rules.

know me through here

thank God we didnt fly today otherwise i'd surely pee in my pants. the wind was practically howling and amost tearing things apart which definitely made flying more bumpy than i can imagine. will post more and better pics of yday's flight when i get WT's share. okay, for now, some facts or weird habits abt me.

  1. i must dry the kitchen sink each time after washing the dishes.
  2. i need a blanket or a quilt (depending on weather) irregardless if i'm feeling cold or not.
  3. i dont rest on my bed unless i'm in a new change of clothes or already bathed.

  9. i love spicy food.
  10. i love fruits esp mandarins, mango, strawberries, berries, banana, durian (sometimes), lychee, jackfruit, hoho...the list goes on.
  11. i rather go for noodles and pastas than rice.
  12. i love candles by ROOT (i mentioned tis before).
  13. my ipod & winamp player consists of 95% classical, instrumental and jazz music and the remaining 5% korean songs. [EDITED: 95% and 5% include english and chinese songs respectively.]

come fly with me

my day started with great anticipation and excitement cos tis is the day we're going flying, with WT, other half's ex-classmate at uni. we arranged to meet at 11am at st. leonards train station and then he'll drive us to bankstown airport which is inner west of sydney. apparently, we were a quarter late. thus, we had to settle brunch on the road. i felt sorry that WT had to gobble up his burger cos he was the one behind the wheel while other half and i slowly had our fill in the car.

we got to basair, WT's flight school, at 12:20pm. 10mins earlier than the booking time. thank goodness we were not late or i dont know what will happen, say ask us to come back another day or something like that. we waited for WT to settle the paperwork, crosswind + fuel consumption + heading calculations before we ran off to rent headsets for other half and myself. our flight was booked for 2 hours and if we dont fly back say 2.5-3 hours later, basair will come search for us, according to the route we're travelling on. the route WT chose for today was katoomba (or where the blue mountains are) and the sydney harbour bridge.

Image hosted by Photobucket.com
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

keys to VH-ISM (registration number of the plane. okay, i know there's no number here. jus accept it. btw, VH is australia's code).
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

it was a short walk from basair to the plane. wow, my first time seeing a propeller plane upfront. took a couple of pics for WT cos he's always with the instructor so never had a pic taken with the plane. other half and i took some too. after the usual routine check and refuelling, we were all set to go. the takeoff went okay. no glitch whatsoever. the ride was smooth as we climbed alttitude but it started getting bumpy as we were nearing blue mountains. an expected phenomenon while flying above mountains, as i was told, by WT and other half, both experts in aerospace. i was getting scared and my palms started sweating (even though i was cold from the air coming thru the ventilators on the celing) and i wish i can hug my smelly pillow. jus then, all the thoughts and possibilities of taking flying as a hobby vanished into thin air. to make matters worse, i was also getting a lil' airsick. i cant imagine flying across all the suburbs to get to the harbour bridge. i was thinking if i should have stayed home. so bad isnt it? WT kindly invited me for the flight and i actually regretted coming?!?! what nonsense!!!! well, it was temporary. the moment i got off the plane and feeling better, i was itching for the next flight out. sadly, it wont be anytime soon since WT is going away for a while. we flew past homebush bay, parramatta, lion island, dee why, manly, and were almost nearing the harbour bridge so we requested for airspace clearance but were instructed to stay put due to a medical emergency helicopter that was taking off nearby. so we had to circle ard where we were. the circle was so tight that i felt giddy. now i know how it feels to be on a merry-go-round for continuously 10 times. we went circling and circling and then i noticed us moving ahead, towards the bridge. as we could be spotted on the radar by the traffic controller, we were warned to stay put and wait for further instructions. so we went circling again. tis time, not as tight as the one before. at tis point, WT asked if we'd like to head back, afraid that we might go low on fuel after all the circling and also the heavy traffic in that area that may hinder further advancement into the harbour bridge area. we were fine with it though i was disappointed not getting a close up view of the sydney trademark but whats more important than a plane with enough fuel to take us back safely. i'm sure we've sufficient fuel but i suppose experience tells WT that tis must be a bad day to fly to the harbour bridge and that we might have more circling to do.

the trip back was slightly shorter and more bearable. yeah, now i declare myself motion sick (though i thought i was improving). dramamine shall be my travelling companion next time i fly again. landing is always a concern in the aviation industry. actually, taking off is also of prime concern. cruising is the one that is less dangerous. okay, i managed to take a good video of the landing. i'm so proud of myself cos lately i found out that i suck at using my digicam. saw that the sun was setting and so i asked for the time (i didnt wear my watch). it was already 4:15pm, wow, time flies. we went back to basair to report and also to return the keys & emergency kit. somewhat, the journey back to our place at kingsford seems quite short, compared to travelling from st. leonards to bankstown earlier on.

meant to bring WT to straits kitchen but it was closed, still early to opening time for dinner. we settled for a hongkong restaurant instead. all of us didnt have the appetite to eat. probably cos our stomachs were used to the idea of eating at straits kitchen. according to WT over dinner, it was good weather today. couldnt be better. well, the fogginess u see in the pics were due to the dirty windows and also the fact that its winter now. after dinner, we proceed to a dessert shop which other half and i walked past tons of times but never once tried it. i had mango sago while other half had tis herbal thingy which we thought might help relieve him of his heatiness. WT obviously had something exotic. very typical of him. whenever his food arrived, i always wanna drool. he had tis coconut thingy which had fruits in it. desserts mark the end of the day. we bade farewell and contemplate on meeting again before he leaves for his new stint in the land with the world's tallest building (as of today). we'll miss an adventurous friend.

a walk down memory lane

queen's bday is over.... hmm... i didnt get her anything but she gave us a long weekend. HA!

our room is getting to look and maybe smell like a pig sty, so we decided to move our butts and s p r i n g clean. now, the carpet is dustless, the bedsheets are clean, our clothes are washed and the kitchen floor is sparkling (we got the hang of cleaning that we ventured out to the kitchen). our stomachs sure know when to growl at the right time. after we dumped the sheets into the dryer, we left for the uni for lunch, PENANG LAKSA (so it claimed). also get to send out our fathers' day cards. kinda late hor...what to do, the post office was closed yday.... cos of the queen's bday. yeah yeah, now blaming the queen?!?! was deciding between watching mr & mrs smith or proceeding with our original plan, that is to buy candles + cat search + ikea. i forgot my specs so we went on with the original plan.
peter's of kensington ran out of my fave ROOT candle in raspberry vanilla. :( so i got 3 others in peach vanilla, wild blackberry and citrus spritzer. they smell really heavenly. then, it was a walk down memory lane. other than reminiscing our old place, we tried to look out for meow meow, but with no luck. ikea is located within moore park supacentre, some sort like the old IMM with lotsa furniture shops. for what i know, IMM is a rather happening place now. can shop, can dine. its such a breeze shopping on a weekday. no crowds, no pushings, no frustrations and u get staff that are nice and friendly. now, u can call shopping therapeutic.
